I recall listening to John Maxwell speak at Hillsong Conference last year. He focussed in on a leadership principle that challenged me.

Many times, I have heard people say "Live each day as if it were your last." But the practicalities of such a statement made my mind spin. How do you live each day as if it were your last? How do you live with no regrets? How do you prioritise everything you want to do before the day ends?

With so much confusion, my life was at a standstill. I couldn't live each day as if it were my last because I didn't know what my last day should look like.

But after listening to John Maxwell, my perspective changed. All of a sudden, I knew exactly what to do. John Maxwell spoke of writing a "Just For Today" list. This was a list of essential things he wanted to achieve everyday. His list focused on tangible, achievable goals that could be accomplished daily. He had thought about what kind of life he wanted to live - how he wanted to interact with people, the attitude he wanted to do things with, and his list showed this.

The "Just For Today" list is helping me to live life well. I can break my long-term goals down into manageable steps to accomplish daily.

Some of the things I have on my list are:

  • Just for today... encourage at least 3 people
  • Just for today... read my Bible for 30min
  • Just for today... exercise for 30min

Sometimes I don't get everything done on my list, but I pick up and go again the next day. My list gives me purpose and direction in the planning of my days and I consider it to be an important leadership tool to be able to spend my time wisely.

Time management is an important skill in leadership. I hope this helps you in some way.

July 22-23

23 youth from various corps in Northern NSW attended a leadership training weekend for i.d. at Darlington Park Resort near Coffs Harbour last weekend.

The weekend provided an opportunity to build friendships with people from other corps, as well as learning about and discovering our their leadership style and how to put it into practice.

Members of the Sydney i.d. team - Miriam, Claire, Sonya, Luke, Nathan and Jodie taught the sessions over the weekend, focussing in on how leadership begins with personal leadership, and the feedback was positive.

i.d.

It was exciting to hear of the progress some of the youth had made in impacting their corps since the first i.d. weekend was held, and also to hear new dreams and ideas birthed during the weekend with timelines implemented to bring great ideas into reality.

A great time was had by everyone who attended. With groups of youth involved in i.d. all over Australia, there is much to look forward to.

This section is soon to be filled with answers to YOUR questions, so if you have questions about God, The Salvation Army, the Bible or anything else, send them in an email with the subject: FAQ to youth.net.info@gmail.com and check back to see if your question is in the next issue of Youth.Net!

What is I.D.?

I.D. is a 2 year training, equipping and empowering network for the Salvation Army youth and young adults. This mission for I.D. is, in essence, about winning the world for Jesus.

I.D. is about combining what the Salvation Army considers to be the 4 essentials of Christian living: worship, discipleship, mission and social justice into our daily lives. Over a 2 year period, I.D. participants meet together 8-12 times. At each meeting throughout the year there is: networking, updates, training and strategy.

Who is I.D. for?

I.D. is set up to serve the rising generations, so the network is made up of predominantly of youth and young adults aged between 16-25. It is for people who are passionate about seeing the world won for Jesus. It is for people who are not afraid to dream big, and for people who want to be effectively impacting their generation.

Why is I.D. here?

The Salvation Army has been in decline in the western world in recent times. This trend has seen young people leaving in large numbers. While some have become in other denominations, sadly others are no longer part of any Christian community. It is vital that this decline is addressed now. Now is the time for this generation to rise up and shine. It is because of this that I.D. seeks to invest into the lives of the emerging generation of Salvos, raising them up to be committed and dynamic men and women of God.

The DNA of an ID member is that of a faith-filled risk taker, authentic, passionate and purposefully engaged to make a difference in their community.
